New Cariforum, EU finance agreements must benefit the people ...

Secretary General of the Caribbean Forum (Cariforum) of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of nations, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque yesterday said that three financing agreements signed with the European Union (EU) at a value of ?83.1M must trickle down and meet the needs of ordinary people.

?Signature, today, of these agreements signals a beginning but the end product will have no meaning if the people of the region do not feel the impact of the use of these resources. Impact, results and benefits must be the watchwords at the level of implementation. We must satisfy regional stakeholders that our actions bring them?..

Computer science involves the host of sub-divisions ranging from theory to development, programming to computing solutions. A computer science degree provides a foundation that prepares students to constantly adapt to new ideas and technologies. Computer scientists are required to design and create software, problem shoot as and when needs arise, process and store data, devise new and effective security methods and most exciting of all ? develop new and innovative ways of using computers. Professionals in computer science have pushed the boundaries of science and technology to enter the fray of robotics and digital forensics ? fields that had not even existed a few decades ago.

A computer science degree demands an aptitude for math and analytical thought. Students interested in a career in computer science should consider going for a BCS degree to qualify for jobs in this field. A good Bachelors degree in computer sciences will prepare students in implementing and designing software. Software development now entails new areas such as interface design, web development, and mobile computing. Once entrenched in the work force with enough practical work experience, a Masters degree in computer science can help improve job prospects and further your specialization in a particular field.

If your Bachelor of Computer Science degree pushes you towards a career in computer solutions, you would be applying all your theoretical knowledge towards solving computing issues and problems. This field would require a higher degree; even a Ph.D. and a research position in a developmental laboratory. If you choose to get into computer development, you have the option of getting into an entrepreneurial position and maybe even starting your own company that specializes in the same.

There are also a number of new careers that demand a CS degree such as web development, information technology, computing management, information security and database administration. Web development is the latest trend and almost every company today has a website. Web developers in turn create and maintain these sites using the latest technological know-how and marketing strategies. The communications industry has pushed the boundaries of information technology. Computer science graduates are now employed with mobile companies to develop faster and better ways of communicating. Many MBA graduates now also specialize in computers and programming. Employers are always on the lookout for those with multiple skills and training and career success is a given for these students. Database administrators are also in demand, as more and more companies require their services to effectively collect and interpret information that will help the company to strategize efforts and move forward. Another fast-growing prospect in this field is the subject of online security-predicted to play a strategic role in the future of computer technology. Information security comes into play with regard to online shopping, Internet banking and privacy management.

A computer science degree will therefore prepare you for a challenging career in a variety of jobs. Armed with a solid educational background, the choices are then up to you to make depending on your aptitude and interests.

The Afterburn Effect Applied To Personal Finance | Money Beagle

One of my favorite episodes of Seinfeld involves a plot where George puts in a furious workout which leaves him still sweating after he gets back to the office.? This leads to him being accused of stealing from his employer, as they figured he was sweating from being nervous.

In reality, this type of sweating is actually a good thing when it comes after working out.? It?s known as the afterburn effect, and basically says that after a rigorous workout, your body will still burn extra calories for several hours following a workout in addition to the calories expended during the workout itself.

I?ve actually applied this to my workouts, trying to work out harder for a slightly shorter amount of time versus a moderate workout.? After the moderate workout, your body basically wraps up, whereas after the rigorous workout, additional calories will continue to be burned.? So, even though the calorie meter might read the same, the net calories could be wildly different based on the type of workout you do.

Did you know that the afterburn effect can apply to personal finances?

I think that it can!

Let?s look at an extra mortgage payment.? If you take part of your tax return and make a 13th payment on your mortgage, you?ll see an immediate decrease in your balance, which is the equivalent of the calories burned during a workout, but the afterburn kicks in when you look at the interest payments moving forward.

Let?s look at a hypothetical mortgage for six months.

Without an extra payment, the portion applied to interest might look like:

Month 1 ? $500
Month 2 ? $498
Month 3 ? $496
Month 4 ? $494
Month 5 ? $492
Month 6 ? $490

This would total $2,970 in interest over the six months following the extra payment.

With an extra payment, it would probably look something like this:

Month 1 ? $497
Month 2 ? $495
Month 3 ? $493
Month 4 ? $491
Month 5 ? $489
Month 6 ? $487

This brings your total to $2,952 over the next six months.

That?s an $18 ?savings? over the six months.? That isn?t money in your pocket, because your payments will stay the same, but it will grow your principle balance (and thus your net worth) by that amount.

Now, you can say, ?But, Money Beagle, what?s the difference? It?s only $18?

This is true, but I have two things in reply to that:

  1. The net effect is greater than $18.? I only showed the first six months, but in reality, an extra payment will affect every mortgage payment for the rest of the length of the loan.? This could really work out to an extra couple hundred bucks.
  2. On top of that, the effect adds up quickly.? What if you made a second extra payment split up through the year?? Suddenly you?re looking at $36 over the next few months and probably could be $1,000 savings over the life of the loan.

Bottom line, pennies can add up to dollars which can add up to lots of dollars.

It?s not just debt.? Add an extra 1% to your retirement 401(k) contribution.? $20 per paycheck might not seem like a lot, but that?s $500 a year which can be worth $10-20k in a few years, and could add a couple of hundred thousand dollars or more to your retirement balance when you finally decide to call it quits.

Plus, it ties back to the workout analogy.? You?re not going to lose 10 pounds with one intense workout, but if you put in an intense workout three days a week for a few months, you?ll see those ten pounds work out.? Same goes with extra payments, the effects seem minimal with each individual ?financial workout? but the effects can and will add up if you apply this principle regularly.

And, I believe this can tie back to the afterburn effect?

Do you or have you exercised to the point where the afterburn effect was noticeable?? What other applications in the personal finance world can you apply this principle to?

Joel Kinnaman Talks RoboCop Reboot

robocop-joel-kinnaman

If you wanted your half-human, half-robot super-cop to be more grounded in reality, well you?re in luck! Star Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) has teased some information about the RoboCop reboot directed by Jose Padilha (Elite Squad). Fans of the 1987 original by Paul Verhoeven will remember that Peter Weller starred as the titular hero, a cop revived with the use of state-of-the-art robotics and weaponry after a brutal murder at the hands of some ruthless criminals. The only thing you could see of Weller himself was a narrow band across his lower jaw. That won?t be the case in the reboot, says Kinnaman; we?ll even get to see RoboCop?s eyes! I wonder if this will be more or less reactive than the backlash to Michael Bay?s approach to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Hit the jump to see what Kinnaman had to say.

joel-kinnaman-imageIn an interview with MTV News for the second season of AMC?s The Killing, Kinnaman first talked about his reaction to working with Padilha on the reboot:

?I?m super stoked. Especially with this director. Jos? Padilha is a badass. He?s the real deal.?

Regarding the reality-based technology for the new RoboCop, Kinnaman revealed that Padilha?s father?s career as a scientist had influenced him:

?There?s a lot of neuroscience now raising the question, ?Is all the intelligence in the human body in the brain?? and they?re finding out that, no, it?s not like that. The body has intelligence itself, and we?re much more of an organic creature in that way. It?s not a control tower that does everything.?

So far, so good I guess. But what about the differences between the original and the re-imagined versions? Kinnaman addressed that as well:

?RoboCop is going to be a lot more human. The first movie is one of my favorite movies. I love it. Of course, Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it?s not going to have that tone. It?s a re-imagination of it. There?s a lot of stuff from the original. There are some details and throwbacks, but this version is a much better acting piece, for Alex Murphy and especially when he is RoboCop. It?s much more challenging.?

Now for the good stuff: details on the suit, as per Kinnaman: robocop

?It?s not going to be jaw action. They?re still working on the suit and how it?s going to look, but the visor is going to be see-through. You?re going to see his eyes.?

It will be interesting to see if Kinnaman uses this to his advantage to portray the remaining human half of his robot persona, as this was a big part of the arcs in the original films. Regarding the scene that leads to the death of Alex Murphy and the genesis of RoboCop, Kinnaman teased:

?Yeah. It?s going to be different. But it?s very good. I was looking to do a big movie and to show that I can carry a big movie, and I couldn?t be happier that this is going to be one of those big movies, a blockbuster, but that is also a real movie. A movie-movie.?

And just for good measure:

?It?s going to have a political satire to it too.?

Be sure to check out our own interview with Kinnaman regarding RoboCop, in which he talks about the importance of the reboot?s rating.
