Singles Match Dating: Internet Dating Website Tips: Skype Online ...

Online dating has been around since the early days of the internet. Back in the neanderthal days it was called, yes, cyberdating. Remember? However, as the technology and internet social mores unfold over the years, things keep changing. Fundamentally, singles are looking for romantic relationships online. And they want to protect their privacy and personal safety while doing so.

One of the trends that has come and gone was a software over at Match that had you look at facial types to register what types you found attractive. And also to record who you thought would be attracted to you.

Now that latter question is the interesting one to ponder. I think now I would type all of them as I'm expecting them to find me attractive! lol. Yeah, my confidence level has increased from the prehistoric days of internet dating.

Well, one of the current trends within internet dating is a growing use of Skype. Some singles who've met at a dating site and have moved to being interested in meeting each other for a first date are wanting to use Skype. They're seeing Skype as an additional layer of connection and screening before they reserve the time in their schedule to meeting.

This can also offer couples who live further away from each other a way to connect with 3 dimensional visual layer before traveling significantly to meet. I'll cover that more in the next day or two.

However, since using Skype opens your privacy up massively online, I have to address your safety and security preservation first.

Skype Dating Hazard #1. Opening your webcam to someone across the internet exposes your whole computer for being attacked and hacked.

Know that by connecting with someone over the internet by webcam puts all the data on your computer at risk. You might have personal photos you don't want to share. You might have personal information as well as financial information stored on the computer you are using.

Kind of like you can't be too safe with using perhaps a separate cell phone just for your dating like, you can't be too safe by using perhaps a separate computer with very little on it for Skype dating.

Cam Dating Hazard #2. You must set up a separate personal Skype account with a Nome De Plume name

Just like at internet dating sites you use a Profile Name and not your full personal legal name in your publicly published profile, so it is with Skype. The other person can see you Name and Location of whatever you enter in your Skype profile.

So if you are going to use Skype in conjunction with dating online, then do be sure to set up a separate account than what you may share with your friends or use for work purposes. Think: Protect your privacy and your safety online!

Skype and Webcam Virtual Dating Hazard #3. They can see your home.

Select where you choose to share your Skype and converse from inside of your home very carefully. Do not bring your laptop into your bedroom and Skype with your bed headboard showing behind you. Additionally, you don't want to Skype with your huge picture window showing the front of your neighbor's house behind you. Remember, every building and street has been photographed and is viewable on Google World.

With the privacy laws in the EU, thank goodness, you have the option to opt out of being displayed. However, not so in North America. Just go watch some episodes of Law & Order or NCIS where they deal with internet privacy and jeopardizing your life. This is not about being paranoid. This is just about your being in control and cognizant of what you're doing.

Choose your back drop and background with forethought. A blank wall. A bookcase. Those are what are wise choices for a complete stranger to see of your house before they have met you.

Skype is a great tool and huge break through for creating an additional layer of connect between singles at online dating sites.

However, do think of, consider, and mitigate the risks and hazards you are putting yourself at risk for first before you Skype with a complete stranger. Protect yourself while pursuing love.

foodconsumer.org - Dietary fiber cuts colorectal cancer risk - new study

By David Liu, PHD

sunday July 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- Colorectal cancer is common and deadly, but the disease can be prevented easily in most cases. ? A new study published in the June 22, 2012 issue of PLoS One suggests that eating lots of fiber-rich foods can decrease the risk of colorectal cancer drastically.

The study led by N. Murphy of ?School of Public Health, Imperial College London, London, United Kingdom and colleagues showed intake of an additional 10 grams of total dietary fiber per day was associated with a 13 percent reduced risk of colorectal cancer.

An early analysis of data from the same EPIC study showed that dietary fiber intake was inversely associated with colorectal cancer risk. ?But some other large cohort studies do not support the results. ?The current study considered data collected from the study during a longer follow-up. During an average follow-up of 11 years, 4,517 incident cases of colorectal cancer were identified. Fiber intake was estimated at baseline.

Total fiber intake was also found inversely associated with colon cancer and rectal cancer. ?Colorctal cancer refers to a combination of both so the findings are reasonable.

The associations were not affected by factors including age, sex, or anthropometric, lifestyle, and dietary variables did not affect the associations, the researchers reported.?

With regard to the fiber source, fibers from cereals, and fruit and vegetables all had the same inverse association with colon cancer. ?But only fiber from cereals or grains not that from fruit and vegetables was linked to reduced risk of rectal cancer.

An estimated 103,170 cases of colon cancer and 40,290 cases of rectal cancer are expected in 2012 in the United States and colorectal cancer may kill 61,690 in the same year in the country, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Another European study published in the May 23, 2012 issue of European Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests eating dietary fiber regardless of its source may help reduce the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) significantly.

Fiber rich foods are the best source. ? But if you are too busy to find any such foods to eat, take fiber supplements.

Video: Scientists read monkeys' inner thoughts

Friday, July 20, 2012

Anyone who has looked at the jagged recording of the electrical activity of a single neuron in the brain must have wondered how any useful information could be extracted from such a frazzled signal.

But over the past 30 years, researchers have discovered that clear information can be obtained by decoding the activity of large populations of neurons.

Now, scientists at Washington University in St. Louis, who were decoding brain activity while monkeys reached around an obstacle to touch a target, have come up with two remarkable results.

Their first result was one they had designed their experiment to achieve: they demonstrated that multiple parameters can be embedded in the firing rate of a single neuron and that certain types of parameters are encoded only if they are needed to solve the task at hand.

Their second result, however, was a complete surprise. They discovered that the population vectors could reveal different planning strategies, allowing the scientists, in effect, to read the monkeys' minds.

By chance, the two monkeys chosen for the study had completely different cognitive styles. One, the scientists said, was a hyperactive type, who kept jumping the gun, and the other was a smooth operator, who waited for the entire setup to be revealed before planning his next move. The difference is clearly visible in their decoded brain activity.

The study was published in the July 19th advance online edition of the journal Science.

All in the task

The standard task for studying voluntary motor control is the "center-out task," in which a monkey or other subject must move its hand from a central location to targets placed on a circle surrounding the starting position.

To plan the movement, says Daniel Moran, PhD, associate professor of biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science and of neurobiology in the School of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, the monkey needs three pieces of information: current hand and target position and the velocity vector that the hand will follow.

In other words, the monkey needs to know where his hand is, what direction it is headed and where he eventually wants ot to go.

A variation of the center-out task with multiple starting positions allows the neural coding for position to be separated from the neural coding for velocity.

By themselves, however, the straight-path, unimpeded reaches in this task don't let the neural coding for velocity to be distinguished from the neural coding for target position, because these two parameters are always correlated. The initial velocity of the hand and the target are always in the same direction.

To solve this problem and isolate target position from movement direction, doctoral student Thomas Pearce designed a novel obstacle-avoidance task to be done in addition to the center-out task.

Crucially, in one-third of the obstacle-avoidance trials, either no obstacle appeared or the obstacle didn't block the monkey's path. In either case, the monkey could move directly to the target once he got the "go" cue.

The population vector corresponding to target position showed up during the third hold of the novel task, but only if there was an obstacle. If an obstacle appeared and the monkey had to move its hand in a curved trajectory to reach the target, the population vector lengthened and pointed at the target. If no obstacle appeared and the monkey could move directly to the target, the population vector was insignificant.

In other words, the monkeys were encoding the position of the target only when it did not lie along a direct path from the starting position and they had to keep its position "in mind" as they initially moved in the "wrong" direction.

"It's all," Moran says, "in the design of the task."

And then some magic happens

Pearce's initial approach to analyzing the data from the experiment was the standard one of combining the data from the two monkeys to get a cleaner picture.

"It wasn't working," Pearce says, "and I was frustrated because I couldn't figure out why the data looked so inconsistent. So I separated the data by monkey, and then I could see, wow, they're very different. They're approaching this task differently and that's kind of cool."

The difference between the monkey's' styles showed up during the second hold. At this point in the task, the target was visible, but the obstacle had not yet appeared.

The hyperactive monkey, called monkey H, couldn't wait. His population vector during that hold showed that he was poised for a direct reach to the target. When the obstacle was then revealed, the population vector shortened and rotated to the direction he would need to move to avoid the obstacle.

The smooth operator, monkey G, in the meantime, idled through the second hold, waiting patiently for the obstacle to appear. Only when it was revealed did he begin to plan the direction he would move to avoid the obstacle.

Because he didn't have to correct course, monkey G's strategy was faster, so what advantage was it to monkey H to jump the gun? In the minority of trials where no obstacle appeared, monkey H approached the target more accurately than monkey G. Maybe monkey H is just cognitively adapted to a Whac-A-Mole world. And monkey G, when caught without a plan, was at a disadvantage.

Working with the monkeys, the scientists had been aware that they had very different personalities, but they had no idea this difference would show up in their neural recordings.

"That's what makes this really interesting," Moran says.

Promoting good customer service ? good for you, good for business ...

I?m a glass-half-full person by nature, but every once in a while the pervasive?bad news?leaves me with?a heavy heart.? The past few days have had that effect, with the ongoing reports of senseless bombing in Syria, continuing famines in the Sahel region of Africa going hand in hand with the unfathomably brutal internal conflicts in Sudan, and other stories of unimaginable horrors.? In our part of the world, I despair that so many people in positions of leadership find it easier to point fingers at each other than do the right thing and be part of a solution. We lead by example, and too often the examples are not providing lessons that should be emulated. ?Man?s inhumanity to man sometimes overwhelms me, despite many examples of improvements in the human condition.? I have to keep reminding myself that we are a work in progress.

OK, enough of that.? Instead, let?s consider what makes us feel good about the world around us.? For most people, being treated with respect is high on their list.? And if someone greets us with a smile as well as respect, it?s almost impossible not to smile in return.? ?Do unto others as you would have them do unto you? never fails.? Why do we keep forgetting that?

And that brings me to how we can put this universal truth to good use in the workplace: with good customer service.? Good customer service should be a no-brainer, right?? Apparently it?s not.? Many enterprises have that concept as part of their mission statement, but too often that sentiment does not translate into practice.? Good customer service includes ensuring that employees obtain the knowledge they need to be helpful.? It includes ensuring that employees appreciate the importance of respect and responsiveness, which is easier for them to buy into when they see frequent examples within the organization.? It means that company policy allows for flexibility so that unusual situations can be handled proactively, with positive outcomes, rather than reactively, with lingering bad feelings.

A remarkable story from January 2011 exemplifies the concept of good customer service.? A grandfather who was in Los Angeles on business was given news unimaginable to all of us ? his 3-year old grandson had been murdered.? He arranged to fly home to be with his daughter, in the hopes of getting there before the little boy was taken off life support. ?Everything seemed to be against him: slow traffic, long lines at LAX, endless security checks with nobody willing to let him go ahead. ?By the time he got past two hours of lines and ran to the gate, by his reckoning the plane would have left the gate 12 minutes earlier.? But the Southwest Airlines pilot was waiting for him.? The pilot told him, ??They can?t go anywhere without me and I wasn?t going anywhere without you. Now relax. We?ll get you there. And again, I?m so sorry.?? Now that?s customer service.? And in order for this to happen, somewhere along the line more than one Southwest employee had passed along the message, which implies that there was something in the Southwest culture that empowered those employees to do the right thing.? That?s what can make a difference more broadly: cultivating a corporate culture of good customer service top-down as well as bottom-up.

One enterprise whose ?product? personifies good customer service is Disney.? They share their secrets to successful management through their Disney Institute, in which all of their lessons focus on ways in which to cultivate a culture of good customer service enterprise-wide.? As I mentioned in a previous post (Bhutan and Disney World, two places where happiness matters), at Disney employees are trained to view their job as making their customers (aka guests) happy.? And, as we all know, making other people happy makes?us happy. It?s a win-win formula.

We can all think of places where we like do to business because the people are friendly and helpful.? And we can all think of places that we?d rather avoid because the service is invariably slow, unhelpful, or rude ? and sometimes all three.? Sometimes our good experiences are purely by luck; the enterprise, through no expectation on their part, has hired someone who is helpful and friendly by nature.? Other times, the place is a pleasure to interact with because everyone treats you well and seems to enjoy what they do.

Where I live, one example of a place with good customer service is Home Depot.? I know two people whose retirement plan was to work at Home Depot because they love working with tools and they couldn?t imagine anything more fun than helping people choose the best tool for their needs.? If you go to our local Home Depot it doesn?t matter what you are looking for, not only is there a knowledgeable person to help you, but a knowledgeable person to help you with enthusiasm.? It is part of their culture.? Another favourite example of mine is the Running Room, where employees love nothing more than helping people get kitted out to run and sharing their excitement.

We all have choices in how we approach our work, regardless of whether we are in sales, service, teaching, management, or any other function.? We live in a stressful world, where we can encounter many frustrations every day, and it is easy to get angry and point fingers.? But anger begets anger and this makes us all losers.? If, instead, we take a deep breath, give people the benefit of the doubt, and show by example a constructive way to overcome an issue, everyone stands to benefit.? The same thing applies to life outside of work.? What can we do, aside from choosing to frequent places that provide good customer service?? How about leading by example?? People might just follow your lead!
