seo for real estate feature image template.002Love it or hate it, search engines are driving more traffic to your website than any other online channel. In fact, when it comes to traffic, search beats out social media by more than 300 percent! To help you understand the ins and outs of search engine optimization (SEO), we?ve rounded up five of our favorite posts on the topic. (For those who are entirely new to the world of SEO, take a quick look at our Little Black Book of SEO Terminology so you can get familiar with all of the different terms).

In no particular order?

by?John E. Miller (via Geek Estate)

If you?re looking for a quick read where you can get some solid SEO takeaways, this post is for you. The top ten list offers easily digestible insight, with tips that range from using internal links and obtaining backlinks to creating content and virtual tours. Quote: ?Utilization of videos and pictures are incredibly important in increasing SEO for any website; however, they are even more important for real estate SEO efforts.?

by Jeff Bernheisel (via Inman News)

An incredibly detailed post with a narrower focus than the previous entry, ?Winning the local SEO game? offers practical advice for optimizing your site for local search. The three main points author Jeff Bernheisel explores are 1) how to tag your site properly, 2) how to get indexed by different sites and social networks, and 3) how social media sharing and ?buzz? can help improve your search rankings. Quote: ?Many in the SEO world believe that this ?buzz? will eventually become more important than the old-school methods of building backlinks and worrying about keyword density.?

by David Friedman (via Realtor Mag)

The ?3 Pillars? post opens with some great facts and figures as to why SEO is crucial for real estate. Author David Friedman then goes on to thoroughly explain each of his three pillars: keyword strategy, website technology, and optimizing your content for search. Quote: ??when you invest in SEO, you?re constantly building on your earlier investments. This is like buying a home instead of renting. Your dollars build equity.?

by Emily Cote (via Outspoken Media)

An insightful post from the boutique SEO consulting company Outspoken Media, ?Guide to Real Estate SEO,? does a great job of setting up the challenges that real estate professionals face when optimizing for search. Author Emily Cote then does a deep dive that covers everything from strategy and content to IDX technology and URL structures. Quote: ?SEO is vital to a successful online presence for both brokers and agents because higher rankings can translate into significant sales increases?especially when each transaction is in the $100,000s.?

by Colin Ryan (via Real Estate Marketing Academy)

We?ve decided to include this popular post from our Academy on the list because it offers a slightly different approach than the other entries. Instead of focusing on new techniques that you can implement to improve your SEO, it covers seven common flaws that plague SEO strategies. It?s a great tool for evaluating the potential shortcomings of your SEO efforts. Quote: ?Trying to rank for ?Boston real estate?? You?ll be competing with hundreds of other companies, as well as big publishers like Zillow and Trulia. Instead, do your research: Use Google?s AdWords Keyword Tool??

Family seeks answers in death near Hernandez home | Sports | The ...

Hernandez Police Football

STEVEN SENNE/ASSOCIATED PRESS New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez (81)'s home was visited by State and local police this week.

STEVEN SENNE ? AP

BOSTON -- At least one company yanked an endorsement deal from New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on Friday as puzzled family members of a friend found slain a mile from Hernandez's home sought answers about how he died.

Police have searched in and around Hernandez's sprawling home in North Attleborough, not far from where the Patriots practice, but a court clerk said that as of Friday afternoon no arrest warrants had been issued in the case. The Bristol County district attorney has not released any information, other than saying the death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was being treated as a homicide.

A jogger found Lloyd's body in an industrial park Monday. Family members said Friday that Lloyd had been dating Hernandez's fiancee's sister for about two years. They said the two men were friends who were together the night Lloyd died.

Police in nearby Providence, R.I., said they had assisted Massachusetts state police and North Attleborough police with activity related to the Hernandez investigation at a strip club named Club Desire. It was unclear if they believed Lloyd and Hernandez might have been at the club in the days before Lloyd died. A reporter was escorted out of the club Friday afternoon before she could speak with employees or patrons.

Family members have said Lloyd, 27, was never in trouble.

"I want the person that killed my son to be brought to justice," said Lloyd's mother, Ursula Ward. "That's my first-born child, my only boy child, and they took him away from me. ... I wouldn't trade him for all the money in the world. And if money could bring him back I would give this house up to bring my son back. Nothing can bring my son back."

Family members said they had heard from Lloyd's girlfriend but not from Hernandez after Lloyd's death. They are anxiously awaiting an arrest in the case.

"We're just hoping for justice," cousin Marsha Martin said. "We don't want Odin to have died in vain."

Hernandez's attorney Michael Fee has acknowledged media reports about the state police search of his Hernandez's home but said he wouldn't have any comment on it.

Attleboro District Court clerk magistrate Mark E. Sturdy said three search warrants were issued in the investigation earlier in the week but have not been returned, meaning they're not public. He said no arrest warrants had been filed in state courts by the time court closed at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Hernandez was gone from his home for most of the day Friday, including when two state police officers knocked on his door. He returned home with his attorney around 5 p.m.

Patriots spokesman Stacey James has said the team does not anticipate commenting publicly during the police investigation. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was waiting for the legal process to take its course.

CytoSport, a Benicia, Calif.-based company that makes Muscle Milk and other supplements for athletes, said Friday it was ending Hernandez's endorsement contract, effective immediately, because of the investigation.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. Since then, he has combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April but is expected to be ready for training camp. Last summer, the Patriots gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.

Hernandez said after he was drafted that he had failed a drug test while with the Gators and had been upfront with NFL teams about the issue.

Earlier this week, a man filed a lawsuit in South Florida claiming Hernandez shot him in the face after they argued at a strip club there.

Alexander Bradley's lawsuit accuses Hernandez of negligence, among other things, suggesting that the shooting may have been accidental. Bradley said he lost his right eye and suffers many other lingering effects from the shooting.

A spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County sheriff's office said Friday that investigators would need to speak with Bradley to move forward with a criminal investigation and cannot rely on the claims he made in his lawsuit. The spokeswoman, Teri Barbera, said Bradley repeatedly refused to cooperate in the criminal probe after he was shot in February, telling detectives he didn't know who shot him.

Hernandez's attorney did not respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.

Tropical Storm Barry bears down on Mexico's coast

VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) ? Tropical Storm Barry bore down on Mexico's Gulf Coast early Thursday as civil defense workers readied emergency shelters and forecasters warned of the possibility of deadly flash floods and mudslides.

The second tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season packed 45-mph (75-kph) winds that were already being felt as the storm edged toward an expected morning landfall northwest of the port city of Veracruz, authorities said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm was about 30 miles (45 kilometers) north of the Gulf Coast port at 5 a.m. EDT and heading west at 5 mph (7 kph).

The Miami forecasters said Barry would move inland with drenching rains in coming hours and eventually dissipate on Friday over southern Mexico while crossing land.

Between 3 and 10 inches of rain were possible and warned the rains could trigger life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially over mountainous areas, forecasters said. Tropical storm force winds were spreading outward up to 80 miles (130 kilometers) from the center of the system.

Early Thursday, blustery winds were already being reported around the Gulf Coast areas closest to the storm's center. Forecasters said tropical storm conditions were already lashing the coast early Thursday and the high winds would continue through Thursday morning.

A tropical storm warning was in effect from Punta El Lagarto to Tuxpan, in Veracruz state.

Veracruz state Civil Protection Secretary Noemi Guzman said 2,000 shelters had been readied in the state with mattresses, blankets, water and canned food. She said the shelters at schools and recreation centers could house up to 306,000 people.

The port of Veracruz was closed to small vessels because of the strong winds, Guzman added.

The storm had formed as a depression off the coast of Belize on Monday and began moving northward, dumping heavy rains on parts of that country and northern Guatemala before entering Mexico's Bay of Campeche earlier in the week.

Microsoft reportedly neared deal for Nokia's device business, but talks broke down

Microsoft was reportedly near deal for Nokia's device business, but talks broke down

It's often been rumored that Microsoft had an eye on Nokia's handset business. It made perfect sense for both companies -- one a struggling pioneer of the mobile industry and the other a struggling stalwart from the first wave of smartphones. According to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the two were actually quite close to striking a deal and were having "advanced talks" in London as recently as this month. But, according to the all-too-familiar "people familiar with the matter," those talks have broken down. Those same sources say it was Microsoft that walked away from the table over concerns about Nokia's asking price, especially in light of its continued failure to put a significant dent in Apple and Samsung's market share. Though it seems like dreams of a Microsoft-Nokia merger are dead for the moment, don't expect the disagreement to severely affect the duo's partnership. Nokia is still reliant on Microsoft's help to stand out in the market and Microsoft needs the Finnish manufacturer to keep pumping out flagship handsets with Windows Phone on them.

Chinese astronaut teaches 60 million kids from space

A Chinese astronaut gave China its first physics lesson by video from space today, a required lesson for middle schools across the country.

Chinese astronaut Wang Yaping gave a physics lesson by video from a space module orbiting more than 300 km (186 miles) above the earth?on Thursday.

She gulped a globule of water floating in the air, and pushed a fellow astronaut against the module?s wall with a touch of her finger, to illustrate the effects of weightlessness. Then she answered questions from a group of children gathered in a studio in Beijing watching the lesson on live TV.

The scene resembled a similar lesson that US elementary school teacher Barbara Morgan taught from the International Space Station in 2007. But this one had specifically Chinese characteristics.

The questions that the Chinese kids asked?on Thursday?were much like the questions that American kids asked six years ago. Do stars twinkle when you are in space? (No, because there is no atmospheric interference.) Have you seen any UFO?s? (?Not yet? was Ms. Wang?s answer to that one.)

But while Barbara Morgan and her colleagues participated in three low-key sessions with small groups of students in Idaho, Virginia, and Massachusetts, Wang?s class was broadcast nationwide on state TV?s premier channel and 60 million schoolchildren and teachers in 80,000 middle schools watched, according to China?s Education Ministry.

The ministry had ?issued instructions requiring middle schools to adjust their class schedules and organize students to watch? the lesson, according to its website.

The compulsory class reflected the importance that the Chinese government has attached to its ambitious space program. Beijing first sent a human into space only 10 years ago, but plans to build its own space station by 2020.

Beijing has more than just a technological interest in space. A few years ago, just before China launched its first lunar probe, the chief scientist for China's moon program, Ouyang Ziyuan, was blunt about its political purposes.

"Lunar exploration is a reflection of a country's comprehensive national power,? he said in an interview with the official newspaper People's Daily. ?It is significant for raising our international prestige and increasing our people's cohesion."
